Celebrate Paella Week in the UAE 🥘

A celebration of the most quintessential dish of Spanish gastronomy across five of the UAE’s most iconic Spanish restaurants promoted by Turespaña.

From September 20th to the 26th, BOCA will offer a paella for two with a jug of non-alcoholic sangria or four cold hops, or a bottle of house grape for AED 310.

BOCA’s paella list includes seven new and old creations such as the classic SEAFOOD PAELLA with mixed local seafood and shellfish, BOCA’s VEGAN PAELLA with mixed local vegetables, local herbs, and black garlic aioli and ARROZ CON CARNE ‘LAMB MACHBOOS’ with braised lamb shoulder and labneh aioli.

The Spanish specialty store La Despensa – official provider of paella pans for Paella Week in the UAE – along with the Spanish Tourism Office in the UAE are also offering gift hampers to two lucky guests who upload their photo of any paella with #PaellaWeekUAE during the promotion. Check other participating restaurants on social media for their paella promotions.

Come and celebrate, beyond recipes and ingredients, the internationality of the dish and what the Valencians have shared with the world, the glorious paella.

New Art Exhibition: BARRY INVERSON, THE TOUR

This July and in BOCA in DIFC, The Workshop Dubai and Fann A Porter are pleased to present a selection of hand-colored photographic prints from Barry Iverson’s The Tour series.

Iverson’s 25-year long career as a photojournalist for Time magazine gave him a window into stories that have shaped politics and social life in Egypt and across the Middle East. The photographs cleverly juxtapose old and new so that in one image, the viewer simultaneously views life in the 19th and 20th centuries. The exhibition also takes viewers outside of Egypt to Damascus, Doha, Baghdad, Aqaba, and even Paris with each image casting the narrative into the past yet retelling it in a contemporary context.

Through his lens, Inverson witnessed seismic events such as the assassination of Egypt’s President Anwar Sadat but he also trained his photographer’s eye on the detail of Cairo life: its people, architecture, culture, and history – all of which culminates in his art.

“This work is crucial to understanding the layers of history in Egypt and the region. The photography technique takes the viewers into a space of documentary fiction ” – Ghada Kunash, founder of Fann A Porter.

TAPAS FORWARD

TAPAS FORWARD
a delicious & responsible tasting experience

BOCA’s philosophy has always been simple – to serve responsibly what is good and delicious in a friendly and exciting atmosphere and share it with like-minded people. Sourcing ingredients locally and supporting local farmers and fishermen is paramount to our operation. We have also recently stepped up our efforts in maximizing the usage of “by-products” and auditing our kitchen and bar waste. Sustainability, however, is more than just refusing plastic and separating glass; it is a journey and a frame of mind.

Over the last few years we have come across many individuals who share the same values. We have also experimented with flavors of unusual local products, discovered what can grow in the desert and in our seas, and explored what can be done with what is traditionally considered waste.

Keeping flavor and deliciousness as a priority, we bring you findings from our work; an off-menu experimental food and wine tasting experience featuring lesser-known local crops, sustainable seafood, and artisanal and ethical produce from local farmers and from friends abroad. The experience will also showcase BOCA’s efforts with waste reducing techniques.

This single-seating weekly experience is limited to five guests and is hosted on BOCA’s gastrobar by head chef Matthijs Stinnissen alongside BOCA’s directors and sommelier.

Tuesdays at 07:30 pm | Five seats only | Reception, eight courses, five wines or juices – AED 395 | Advanced payment and booking required | Guests can inquire and book through tapasforward@boca.ae | Prices are inclusive of 5% VAT | Prices subject to 7% Authority Fees and 10% service charge

Spanish ⭐Michelin Takeover

On Wednesday February 19th the kitchen and floor of award-winning Mediterranean Restaurant BOCA will be taken over by Spanish 1* Michelin restaurant, Taller [tah-yehr] (MICHELIN GUIDE 2020). Taller, located in the prestigious Bodegas Arzuaga, is the only 1* Michelin restaurant in the Ribera del Duero region in Northern Spain. This region produces some of the world’s most prized wines and was named Wine Region of the Year by Wine Enthusiast Magazine (2012).

Taller shares BOCA’s passion for sourcing locally and has built its reputation on a firm commitment to representing ingredients from the land surrounding its location and the seafood it has access to regionally. Executive Chef Jon Mendoza will present a seven-course tasting menu combining the very best of Castilian and Peruvian cooking using local ingredients from the Arabian Gulf. Expect to try dishes that incorporate different textures and flavors such as Olive Oil from Arzuaga with Duck, Crispy Zucchini Nigiri and ‘Causa’, Pickled Quinoa Salad as well as Pigeon with Buckwheat and Wine Reduction. Spain has access to some of the best fish and seafood in the world through its Atlantic and Mediterranean coastlines but so does the UAE with our Arabian Gulf and Indian Ocean shores. Local produce from the latter are used in an Emirati Seabass Ceviche, and in an Arabian Gulf Hammour cooked in coconut milk, lemon grass and ginger. Other dishes include Crayfish with Garlic and Almonds, and Octopus Rice with Soft-Shell Crab.

Ignacio Arzuaga of Bodegas Arzuaga will complement the menu with five wines from the vineyards and service will be directed by Amaya Arzuaga, supported by the kitchen and floor team of BOCA.

NO WASTE DINNER MAKING A “SEA CHANGE”

“The greatest threat to our oceans is the belief that someone else will save them”

‘An Environmentally Conscious Wine Project’

We have produced more plastic in the past 10 years than in the entire last century, 50% of which is considered ‘un-recyclable’, with an estimated 8 million tons ending up in the ocean annually affecting both sea life and human health alike.* At BOCA we recognize that tackling ocean conservation is more pressing than ever, and along with our friends and partners, we invite you for a night dedicated to this cause.

On November 27th join us as we host Jo Ruxton, producer of the multi-award-winning film ‘A Plastic Ocean’ and founder of the Plastic Oceans Foundation. Screening a twenty minute version of her 2016 documentary, the night will include a reception with sustainable movie snacks and beverages, followed by a zero waste dinner drawing attention to lesser known local produce and maximizing usage of our food paired with environmentally-conscious drinks.

Sponsored by MMI and 10th International, a family run organization dedicated to help tackle ocean pollution through the generation of funds to key environmental projects, the evening will also include an exhibition by local environmentalist Mariska Nell of Waste Me Not. We will also introduce our friends from the private equity firm PURE CE who aim to solve some of the world’s pressing environmental challenges through new technological investments, along with Kathrin Gnilka of 1001 Good Deeds; BOCA’s sustainability and climate-change awareness training partner.

We also invite you to join the beach clean-up scheduled to take place on the same day in associate with Dubai Creek Club and the local non-profit marine conservation organization Azraq.
